St Thomas' Church, Henbury

St Thomas’ Church stands in the quiet village of Henbury, Cheshire, built of stone with a tiled roof and a tall broach spire rising above the west tower. The architect Richard Lane designed the church in 1844–45, adding the chancel about twenty-five years later. Its nave has five bays, a south porch, and a vestry on the southeast side, all marked by simple lancet windows. A clock face sits above a two-light window in the tower’s lower stage, while louvred openings let the bells ring from the upper stage. The lych gate at the churchyard’s north entrance, also Grade II listed, shelters visitors before they step onto the stone path. Inside, the chancel arch is deeply chamfered, and a narrow staircase leads from the chancel floor up to the pulpit. The west gallery, supported by slender iron columns, holds a two-manual organ installed in 1948 and moved in 1985. The chancel floor is paved with Minton encaustic tiles and mosaic, and every stained-glass window dates from the church’s opening year. Two tablets by Matthew Noble from 1869 and a memorial by Harry Hems from 1888 record local people, while the war graves in the churchyard mark one soldier from the First World War and two from the Second. The churchyard itself is bordered by hedgerows and mature trees, giving the place a peaceful air. The lych gate’s decorated bargeboards show careful carpentry, and the tower’s octagonal spire catches the light at different times of day. From the porch, visitors look along the nave’s plain arcades to the east window, its three lights framing two sexfoils and a cinquefoil at the top. The contrast between the church’s modest exterior and its richly detailed interior makes it a quiet point of interest in the countryside.
