Yorkshire Dales

The Yorkshire Dales stretch across North Yorkshire’s upland valleys, framed by the Pennines and bordered by the North Pennines and Lake District. Most of the dales lie within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, while Nidderdale forms a separate protected landscape. Sheltered glacial valleys alternate with exposed moorland, and the Carboniferous Limestone shapes dramatic features such as Malham Cove. Seven major rivers carve through the dales, including the Swale and Wharfe, and extensive cave systems wind beneath the surface. Dry-stone walls and field barns mark the valley floors, especially in Wensleydale and Swaledale. The dales draw walkers along long-distance paths like the Pennine Way and the Yorkshire Three Peaks route. This trail climbs Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen-y-ghent, three of the region’s highest peaks. Caving enthusiasts explore some of Britain’s longest cave systems, while grouse moors and sheep pastures define the open uplands. Lead mining once shaped the landscape in the 19th century, leaving behind cottages and trails such as the Grassington Moor Lead Mining Trail. Traditional villages like Hawes and Malham remain centres of local life and tourism. Visitors find waterfalls at Aysgarth Falls, limestone cliffs at Malham Cove and sweeping views from the Ribblehead Viaduct. The Settle–Carlisle railway offers a scenic ride through tunnels and viaducts, and seasonal buses connect remote spots. Small towns like Kirkby Lonsdale and Masham host markets and pubs, while farmsteads provide bed-and-breakfast stays. The area’s quiet lanes and high paths suit both short walks and long expeditions.
