Karkopf
The Karkopf stands at 1 510 m in the Austrian Tirol, near the Bavarian border. It belongs to the Hochries subgroup of the Chiemgau Alps, a limestone range famous for its grassy peaks and wide views. The mountain lies close to the German resort of Kössen, where walkers set off from the Staffen car park. From there a forest track climbs past the Wetterfahne junction and the Naringalm to the Karalm pastures. The final ascent follows a gentle ridge to the summit. The route attracts families and experienced hikers alike, with a total return distance of 17.2 km and a climb of 1 090 m. The Hochries hut at 1 569 m serves as a popular lunch stop for those arriving from the German side. From the Austrian trail the first glimpse of the Kaisergebirge mountains appears after the big switchback above Staffen. The Karalm meadows show the Karkopf on the left and the Sandspitze on the right, framed by working alpine huts. Visitors find open grassland, steep limestone slabs and sweeping panoramas. The summit ridge is broad and easy, giving views over the Chiemgau Alps and the Bavarian foothills. Below, the Edernalm valley opens towards Kössen, while to the south the Kaisergebirge’s jagged crests rise above the tree line. In summer the pastures are dotted with cattle and wild flowers, and the air carries the scent of hay and pine. The descent retraces the same path, returning through the quiet forest to the Staffen car park.
