Krenkinger Schloss

The Krenkinger Schloss stands in the southern part of Engen’s old town in Baden-Württemberg. It is a two-winged building with a three-storey southern wing and a two-storey northern wing. A round tower now replaces the original angular stair-tower between the wings. Nearby once stood a free-standing residential tower and timber-framed outbuildings. The castle’s history begins in the 15th century, when it first appears in a local register. Heinrich V. of Lupfen took possession around 1494 and later owners added the stair-tower and raised the southern wing between 1536 and 1555. Swedish and Hohentwiel soldiers burned the castle in 1640 during the Thirty Years’ War. French troops plundered it in 1800, and by 1814 plans were made to turn it into offices and a prison. Today the building houses the local forestry office after a thorough renovation in 2001. The core structure remains clearly visible, and the round tower links the two wings. Visitors can walk around the exterior and view the modest but solid architecture of the former residence.
