Invercauld Castle

Invercauld Castle stands in Royal Deeside near Braemar, a country house surrounded by designed landscapes. The Farquharsons built a tower house here in the 16th century, and its vaulted basement survives inside today’s building. Late in the 17th century the tower was remodelled, and through the 18th and 19th centuries further changes were made. In 1875 John Thomas Wimperis transformed the castle in the Scots Baronial style. The house still holds many Victorian furnishings and paintings. The castle has been protected as a category A listed building since the listing system began. Its grounds appear in the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland, recognising their designed layout. The Farquharson family have lived here for centuries, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited houses in the area. The remodelling of 1875 gave the castle its present grand appearance. Inside, visitors can see how successive generations shaped the interiors. A visitor walks through rooms that still contain Victorian furniture and art. The vaulted basement from the 16th-century tower remains visible beneath later floors. The Scots Baronial exterior, added in 1875, frames views over the designed landscape. The Farquharsons’ long connection with the house is evident in every detail. The designed grounds offer peaceful walks among trees and terraces.
