Weinmuseum Moschendorf

The Weinmuseum Moschendorf is a village-like open-air museum in the small community of Moschendorf in southern Burgenland. It sits in the Weinidylle nature park, where the Pinka valley meets the edge of the vast Moschendorfer forest. Fifteen timber and stone buildings from the 17th to the 19th centuries stand around a grassy square, forming a quiet village of the past. The museum began in 1981 after mayor Stefan Behm proposed saving old farm buildings by moving them here. Each structure—from a 1663 granary to a fully fitted cobbler’s workshop and smithy—was dismantled elsewhere and rebuilt exactly as it stood. Traditional presses and wine cellars with straw roofs show how local wine was made and stored through the centuries. A large 1893 barn from Urbersdorf now hosts festivals such as the annual folk-music weekend at Whitsun and a gathering of expatriate Burgenlanders. Two small chapels and a wooden cross with a life-size figure of Christ stand on the wooded slopes nearby. Visitors walk shaded paths between the buildings, seeing tools, furniture and carts exactly where they would have been used long ago.
