Sound Techniques

Sound Techniques was a recording studio in Chelsea, London. It operated between 1965 and 1976 in a former dairy at 46a Old Church Street. The studio was founded by recording engineers Geoff Frost and John Wood, who had previously worked at Levy’s Sound Studio. Frost and Wood designed and built much of their own equipment, including mixing desks, to keep costs low. The studio became known for its high-quality sound, particularly for string sections, after a commission from composer Philip Green. It also gained a reputation for recording early works by influential artists. The studio played a key role in the careers of many folk-rock and rock musicians. Witchseason, Joe Boyd’s production company, regularly used Sound Techniques for artists like Fairport Convention, Nick Drake, and John Martyn. Pink Floyd recorded their early singles ‘Arnold Layne’ and ‘See Emily Play’ there in 1967. Jethro Tull’s debut album *This Was* was made at the studio in 1968. Elton John also recorded an album there in 1970, featuring songs by Witchseason artists. The studio’s reputation attracted other acts in their early stages before they became famous. Visitors to the site would find a building that still carries the legacy of its musical past. The ground floor housed the recording space, while the upper floor contained the control room and workshop. The studio’s design included a high ceiling created by removing the middle of the second floor. A red light in the workshop signalled when recording was in progress, pausing any manufacturing work. Though the studio closed in 1976, its influence remains tied to the building’s history in Chelsea.
