Church of St Teilo, Llantilio Pertholey

The Church of St Teilo stands in the village of Llantilio Pertholey, Monmouthshire, Wales. It is a large and varied medieval church with a Grade I listing. The building began in the 13th century and grew through later centuries. A 14th-century tower rises above the nave, and a 16th-century aisle runs along one side. Three chantry chapels surround the chancel, noted as the church’s most striking feature. The church’s history includes a major restoration in 1890 and smaller repairs in the 20th century. Six bells hang in the tower, all cast in the 17th century. The chancel walls show traces of medieval wall paintings beneath later plaster. Simple lancet windows light the nave, while the chantry chapels have richer tracery. The building remains a quiet witness to centuries of worship and change. Inside, the nave opens into the aisles and the tower arch. The chantry chapels hold plain sedilia and piscinae. A 19th-century roof rests on carved corbels. The floor is paved with irregular slabs worn by centuries of feet. Outside, the churchyard holds yew and oak trees over older gravestones. The tower’s buttresses rise from a battered base, marking its early date.
