The Abbey, Sutton Courtenay

The Abbey in Sutton Courtenay is a medieval courtyard house in Oxfordshire’s Vale of White Horse, beside the River Thames. It stands across the road from a twelfth-century Norman Hall and the Manor House. Recognised as a Grade I-listed building of outstanding historic and architectural interest, it is regarded as a textbook example of an English medieval manor house. Its origins lie in the thirteenth century as a rectory of Abingdon Abbey, a Benedictine monastery in Abingdon-on-Thames. Construction phases continued through the Middle Ages, with work by figures such as Solomon of Rochester and Thomas Beckington, before the current layout was completed in the seventeenth century. The Abbey’s history reflects its changing roles over centuries. From 1495 to 1867 it belonged to St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, leased at times to John Fettiplace. Later owners included Eve Fleming, David Astor, who leased it to the Ockenden Venture for refugee sanctuary, and the Namibia International Peace Centre under exiled Bishop Colin Winter. Since 1980 it has been a spiritual retreat and conference centre run by The New Era Centre, offering hospitality for personal growth and healing. The Abbey forms a quadrangle around a central courtyard, with 28 rooms and a great hall. The two-storey stone and timber structure originally had a thatched roof, and four ranges enclose the courtyard. The oldest parts are the north and west ranges, their wooden frames later encased in stone. The main entrance now leads through a Gothic arch on the east side into the courtyard. A guest house with nine rooms stands nearby, used for visitors and conference guests. The great hall survives open to the roof with a unique cruck truss, its timbers made from carefully sawn trees, and can seat up to sixty people.
