Klixbüll church

St. Nikolaus is an evangelical Lutheran church standing on a low hill outside Klixbüll village in North Frisia. It sits beside the oldest building in the parish, the core of the former Klixbüllhof estate, and shares its minister with the church at Braderup. The building belongs to the North Church diocese and has served the same rural community for centuries. The church first appears in a register of 1240 and was dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Myra. Its first stone structure was lost in a storm tide, and the present early-Gothic brick church with its recessed choir dates from the 13th century. In 1832 the half-finished transepts were removed and replaced by a gallery, and in 1699 a square Baroque tower with a pitched roof was added. The south wall carries flood marks from 1532 and 1634, the earliest known records of North Sea surges in this region. Inside, the oldest piece is a 13th-century font topped by a 1619 cover and a mid-18th-century bowl. A late-medieval rood group and a carved Christ with twelve apostles, both from the early 1500s, survive from before the Reformation. The pulpit of 1618 is attributed to Heinrich Ringerink, a noted wood-carver, and the same workshop made the 1619 font cover and the 1621 altar. The churchyard holds simple gravestones and a few mature oaks, and the view across the flat marshland stretches as far as the Frisian coast on clear days.
