Roding Valley

Roding Valley station stands on the edge of Epping Forest in Essex, just inside the London Borough of Redbridge. It sits on the Hainault loop of the Central line, between Chigwell and Woodford, though the platforms lie closer to the river than to either town. The station opened in 1936 as Roding Valley Halt to serve new housing between Buckhurst Hill and Woodford. Its name comes from the nearby River Roding, which the line crosses on a brick viaduct just west of the platforms. Woodford Junction, where the Hainault branch leaves the main line, is only a short walk away. The track rises gently towards Chigwell, giving views over the surrounding flood plain. Roding Valley is the least-used station on the London Underground, with fewer than 170 000 passenger journeys in 2024. It has no ticket barriers and, uniquely, only one ticket machine. The station was rebuilt in 1948 when the line was electrified and again refurbished in 2006. From the mid-1960s to the early 1990s it ran separate three-car trains adapted for automatic operation, some named FACT. Trains now run through to central London via Hainault, though changing at Woodford is often quicker. At peak times extra services start from Hainault depot and call here before heading to the city. The station itself is small and quiet, with all-wooden buildings on the Woodford side. A single footbridge links the two platforms, and the southern entrance opens into Redbridge while the northern one faces Epping Forest. London Buses route W14 stops nearby. To the east lie undeveloped flood plains of the River Roding, and to the west open space stretches towards Buckhurst Hill. The platforms overlook Woodford Junction, so trains in either direction can be seen crossing the viaduct. The whole setting is calm, with few passengers and a sense of the line’s history still visible in the brickwork and signals.
