Grand-Place

The Grand-Place is the central square of Brussels, a large open space measuring 68 by 110 metres, entirely paved and surrounded by ornate Baroque guildhalls. Two prominent buildings frame the square: the Flamboyant Town Hall with its tall spire and a statue of Saint Michael, and the neo-Gothic King’s House, now the Brussels City Museum. The square’s origins date back to the 11th century when a marketplace was established near a fort built by Charles, Duke of Lower Lorraine. By the 13th century, covered markets for meat, bread and cloth stood along its edges, while a stone fountain provided water. The square’s layout gradually took shape as merchants and guilds gained influence over the nobility. The Grand-Place has witnessed pivotal moments in Belgian history, including the executions of Protestant martyrs in 1523 and the beheadings of Counts Egmont and Horn in 1568. These events marked resistance against oppressive rule and sparked wider rebellion. In 1695, French forces bombarded the square, destroying most of its buildings except the Town Hall and some walls. The guildhalls were rebuilt in the following decades, giving the square its present appearance. By the 19th century, its heritage value was recognised, leading to careful restoration. Since 1998, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors find a grand architectural ensemble dominated by the Town Hall’s Gothic spire and the King’s House’s intricate façade. The guildhalls, each with unique decorative gables, display the wealth and craftsmanship of Brussels’ former trades. The square hosts seasonal events, including a spectacular flower carpet every other August and a grand Christmas tree each winter. Its paved expanse offers clear views of the surrounding buildings, while nearby streets like Rue des Pierres recall the area’s medieval past. The square remains the heart of Brussels, a place where history is visible in every stone.
