Runnymede

Runnymede is a stretch of water-meadow beside the River Thames in Surrey, close to the Berkshire border. The land lies between Old Windsor and Egham, mostly on the west bank south-west of the river. The National Trust manages the main meadows and the Coopers Hill Slopes, while a narrower strip called the Yard Mede sits east of the A308 road. The landscape is a gently rolling vale of small fields, woods, ponds and heath, recognised as a Site of Nature Conservation Interest. Long Mede and Runnymede proper have provided hay for centuries, and the area includes Langham Pond, an oxbow lake formed by the Thames. Runnymede’s fame rests on its role in 1215, when King John sealed Magna Carta on the meadows. The charter itself names the place between Windsor and Staines, and the Magna Carta Memorial stands on Long Mede. The site also hosted the Witan, the Anglo-Saxon council that met under Alfred the Great, shaping England’s parliament. In 1929 Cara Rogers Broughton donated 188 acres to the nation in memory of her husband Urban Broughton, an American-born MP. The gift was praised by the New Bedford Standard-Times as fitting for a charter that underpins American government. The National Trust later added Coopers Hill Slopes and, in 1998, Ankerwycke and the ruins of St Mary’s Priory across the river in Berkshire. Visitors walk through meadows and woodlands managed by the National Trust, passing the twin Lutyens memorials at the Egham and Windsor ends of the A308. The octagonal kiosks and piers carry inscriptions recalling the sealing of Magna Carta and honouring Urban Broughton. On the Coopers Hill Slopes stands the Grade II-listed bridge designed by Lutyens, while Langham Pond offers wetland views and wildlife. Benches line the southern river bank, and the meadows remain a quiet place to reflect on the charter’s legacy. The ruins of the 12th-century priory and the ancient Ankerwycke Yew add layers of history to the floodplain landscape.
