River Derg

The River Derg rises in Lough Derg in County Donegal and winds east for 45 kilometres before meeting the River Strule to form the River Mourne. Its upper stretches cross wild peatland while the lower reaches flow through farmland. Castlederg sits on its banks in County Tyrone. Salmon, grilse and sea trout run the river each season, making it a recognised angling spot. The catchment’s peatland in the west gives way to gentler farmland nearer the border. The river’s modest length keeps it intimate rather than grand. Visitors find quiet paths along the banks and views of the surrounding countryside. The peatland upstream feels remote and unspoilt, while downstream the river threads through fields and small woodlands. Anglers often stand where the water bends, watching for rising fish. The meeting of rivers at the mouth adds a final stretch of interest.
