Palm’sches Schloss

The Palm’sches Schloss stands in the Mönchfeldstraße in Stuttgart’s Mühlhausen district. Built in 1813 for Jonathan Freiherr von Palm, it replaced an earlier structure on the same site. The building follows classical lines but has been altered several times, most notably with additions around 1895. Since 1971 it has been protected as a monument. Today it houses the local district council offices for Mühlhausen. The Palm family rose from bankers in Vienna to imperial knights in the early 18th century. They bought the Mühlhausen estate in 1711 and became founders of the Palm dynasty. Their coats of arms and decorative elements remain part of the city’s heritage. Two lion sculptures, gate pillars and a garden gate from the estate are kept in Stuttgart’s Lapidarium. The building reflects the family’s rise and the changing tastes of the 19th century. Visitors find a stately classical façade softened by later extensions. Inside, the former grandeur appears in plasterwork and window mouldings. The surrounding streets show Mühlhausen’s quiet, well-kept character. The building sits among modern homes yet keeps its landmark presence. Its modest scale and classical details contrast with the busy city centre only a few kilometres away.
