Schloss Schrems
Schloss Schrems stands on Dr.-Theodor-Körner-Platz in the town of Schrems, between the Braunbachbrücke and the Budweiserstraße. It is a two-storey four-winged building, originally surrounded by a moat. The city took ownership in 1928 and has protected the structure since. The castle’s façades were reshaped after a fire in the 18th century. The west and south fronts carry early Baroque portals topped with double coats of arms from the Osy-Bartenstein and Thurn-Vrints families. Inside, cross-vaulted passageways lead to a courtyard with walled-up arcades. A two-flight staircase rises around a central well, and the south-west corner room still shows its 17th-century geometric stucco frames. Today the building houses a vocational school and a new student hostel designed by Shibukawa Eder Architects and F+P ARCHITEKTEN ZT GMBH. The main wings remain intact, while the south wing once held stables in a three-bay hall supported by Tuscan columns. Visitors can walk the vaulted corridors and view the preserved stucco work and heraldic decorations that mark each era of the castle’s history.
