Aldwych Theatre

The Aldwych Theatre is a West End playhouse in Aldwych, City of Westminster, central London. Built in the Edwardian Baroque style by W. G. R. Sprague, it opened in 1905 as a pair with the Novello Theatre. Seymour Hicks and American impresario Charles Frohman funded the project, with construction led by Walter Wallis. The Grade II-listed building seats 1,200 across three levels. Its location near Covent Garden and Holborn tube stations makes it easy to reach. The theatre has hosted landmark productions and notable figures. In 1913, Serge Diaghilev and Vaslav Nijinsky rehearsed *Le Sacre du Printemps* here before its Paris premiere. The Aldwych farces from 1923 to 1933, written by Ben Travers, featured a regular company including Ralph Lynn and Tom Walls. Laurence Olivier directed *A Streetcar Named Desire* in 1949, starring his wife Vivien Leigh, who later won an Oscar for the film. Visitors find a grand Edwardian interior with ornate plasterwork and a three-tiered auditorium. The stage has seen productions from Shakespeare to modern musicals like *Tina: The Tina Turner Musical*. The Royal Shakespeare Company performed here for over 20 years, and recent shows include *Elf the Musical*. The theatre’s history is visible in its architecture and the names carved into its past.
