Fowlis Castle

Fowlis Castle stands eight kilometres northwest of Dundee in the hamlet of Fowlis. It is a tower house built in the 17th century on land once held by the Maule family and later by the Mortimers. In 1337 the castle passed to the Gray family when Sir Alexander Gray of Broxmouth became Lord Gray of Fowlis. The building remains a working farmhouse today and is protected as a category B listed building. The castle’s history includes a notable visit in 1598 when the Duke of Holstein, brother of Anne of Denmark, arrived for dinner during a royal progress. Patrick Gray, the fifth Lord Gray, was ordered by James VI to meet the duke six miles from the castle. Visitors find a quiet farmhouse set in rolling Angus countryside. The tower house preserves its 17th-century structure while continuing to serve as a home. The surrounding hamlet adds to the peaceful rural atmosphere of the area.
