Dunraven Castle

Dunraven Castle stands on the South Wales coast near Southerndown. It began as a 12th-century fortification built by Arnold le Boteler and later became a manor house owned by the Vaughan family in the 16th century. In the early 19th century, Thomas Wyndham transformed it into a castellated hunting lodge. His wife designed the rebuilding, which was completed between 1802 and 1806. The estate passed to their daughter Caroline and her husband Windham Henry Quin, who later became the 2nd Earl of Dunraven. The house was remodelled again in the 19th century, with changes by Egbert Moxham. The castle is worth the journey for its layered history and surviving structures. The Vaughan family’s manor house was recorded by John Leland in the 16th century. Thomas Wyndham, an MP for Glamorgan, commissioned the hunting lodge, and his wife’s design drew inspiration from Clearwell Castle. The 2nd Earl of Dunraven expanded the estate and added his wife’s family name. The house remained in the family until after the Second World War, when it served as a military hospital. Though demolished in 1963, parts of the estate survive as part of the Glamorgan Heritage Coast. Visitors find a walled garden, a gatehouse and other historic structures. The surviving buildings are Grade II listed and part of the Cadw/ICOMOS Register of Parks and Gardens. The coastline offers views across the Bristol Channel, with the heritage coast providing a scenic backdrop. The ruins and gardens reflect the estate’s long history, from medieval fortifications to a 19th-century mansion. The site blends natural beauty with architectural heritage, making it a quiet but compelling place to explore.
