Royal Cinema

The Royal Cinema stands on De Winton Street in Tonypandy, a town in the Rhondda Cynon Taf valley. It was built in 1892 as the Theatre Royal, designed in neoclassical style with a symmetrical frontage of three bays. The building used a culvert under the Clydach brook, which flows into the River Rhondda Fawr nearby. Its main auditorium had a proscenium arch, typical of Victorian theatres. The front showed plaques reading ‘18 Town Hall 92’, indicating early public use. Charlie Chaplin performed there in 1901, and Harry Quelch spoke after the Tonypandy riots in 1910. The theatre became a cinema in 1912 under Sam Duckworth and W. E. Willis, closing in 1918 before reopening in 1922. It operated until 1959, then served as council offices, a snooker club, a nightclub and a shopping arcade. By 2010, small retail units lined parts of the ground floor. In 2016 it was converted into flats and shops, preserving its historic façade. Visitors now see a row of private flats where the auditorium once stood. The street front still shows the original neoclassical windows and doorways. The building’s arches and pediment remain visible above the modern shopfronts. The culvert beneath carries the brook unseen, a reminder of the site’s valley setting. The converted flats and shops sit quietly on De Winton Street, their history marked only by the plaques and the shape of the old theatre front.
