Lancaster Gate tube station

Lancaster Gate is an Underground station in the City of Westminster. It stands beside Bayswater Road in Paddington, just north of Kensington Gardens. The station sits on the Central line between Queensway and Marble Arch. A hotel now covers the site where the original station building once stood. The hotel’s lower floors were re-clad in white stone in 2004–05. The station opened on 30 July 1900 as part of the Central London Railway. It closed briefly in 2006 for lift refurbishment after repeated failures were judged a safety risk. A longer closure from January to June 2017 saw the lifts completely replaced. Transport for London noted the small ticket hall often becomes crowded, especially at weekends. Visitors find a modest ticket hall and the platforms below. The station is a short walk from the Marlborough Gate entrance to Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens. It provides a useful link to Paddington station for onward main-line travel. London buses 94, 148, 274 and the night route N207 stop nearby.
