Parish Church of St Nicholas and St Faith

The Church of St Nicholas and St Faith stands in Saltash, Cornwall, beside the River Tamar. It is built of rubble with a slate roof and has a nave, a north aisle of five bays, a south porch, and a rare North Tower. Parts of the church date from 950 AD, before the Norman Conquest. In the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries the building was remodelled. For eight centuries it served as a chapel-of-ease to St Stephen’s until 1881. The church became a Parish Church in its own right in 1881 by order of the Privy Council. It had previously been known as St Nicholas’ Chapel. In 1952 it was recognised as a grade I listed building. Today it belongs to the Benefice of Saltash alongside St Stephen’s and churches in Botus Fleming, Landrake, and St Erney. The parish forms part of the Saltash Team Ministry in the Diocese of Truro. Inside, visitors find a spacious nave and a north aisle with five bays. The rare North Tower rises above the building. The south porch provides a quiet entrance. The church’s long history is visible in its fabric. It remains an active place of worship in the town.
