Emmanuel Church

Emmanuel Church stands in West Hampstead, a London suburb, at the corner of Lyncroft Gardens and Fortune Green Road. The red-brick building was designed by John Alick Thomas in the Gothic Revival style and completed in 1903. Its south chapel holds a painting by Frank O. Salisbury. The church replaced an earlier building on Mill Lane, whose front wall remains beside Cholmley Gardens. The original church hall now serves as the Dornfell Road Community Centre. The church is recognised for its heritage significance, having been listed Grade II by English Heritage in 1999. It remains an active place of worship, with weekday services and Sunday eucharists. Several notable musicians once served as organists here, including Harold Darke from 1906 to 1911. Peter Galloway later served as Priest-in-Charge and Vicar between 1990 and 2008. The building reflects the growth of West Hampstead in the late 19th century. Visitors find a quiet sanctuary with Gothic arches and stained glass. The south chapel’s painting by Salisbury draws attention. The remaining wall from the old church on Mill Lane marks the site’s history. The community centre next door was once the original church hall. The churchyard and nearby streets offer peaceful walks in an area of Victorian terraces.
