Fan Llia

Fan Llia is a broad ridge in the Fforest Fawr uplands of the Brecon Beacons National Park, Wales. It lies within Powys county and forms a subsidiary summit of Fan Fawr. The hill peaks at 632 metres and has a subsidiary top called Fan Dringarth to the north. Craig Cwm-du truncates its northern ridge with cliffs. Several house platforms of archaeological interest are found on its flanks. The hill’s geology consists mainly of Devonian sandstones from the Brownstones Formation. Its southern slopes are formed from Plateau Beds Formation sandstones, while the north-east has sandstones and mudstones of the Senni Beds Formation. Rock exposures are rare as the hill is covered with glacial till and peat. A post-glacial landslip extends from near the summit of Fan Dringarth down its eastern slopes. The hill drains west into the Afon Llia and east into the Afon Dringarth, which feeds Ystradfellte Reservoir. Walkers may wander freely across the open country of Fan Llia. Most choose to start from the car park at Blaen Llia, off the road between Ystradfellte and Heol Senni. The Beacons Way long-distance footpath follows the ridge route to the summit. The surrounding landscape includes streams, reservoirs, and upland moorland. Views extend over the Brecon Beacons and the Fforest Fawr uplands.
