Hartlepool Abbey

Hartlepool Abbey stands on the Headland Estate of Hartlepool, known as the Heugh or Old Hartlepool, in County Durham. It was a Northumbrian monastery founded in 640 by Hieu, the first of the saintly recluses of Northumbria, and Aidan of Lindisfarne. The abbey was a double monastery, housing both monks and nuns, and was presided over by Hieu from 640 to 649. Hilda, later known as Hilda of Whitby, became the second abbess in 649. The monastery was built in the early Anglo-Saxon style, likely consisting of a walled enclosure of simple wooden huts surrounding a church. The abbey played a significant role in the history of Northumbria. Hilda organised the monks to follow a clear timetable of prayer, work, and rest. In 655, King Oswiu sent his one-year-old daughter Ælfflæd to be consecrated to God under Hilda’s care. Hilda remained at Hartlepool Abbey until 657 or 658, when she moved to Whitby Abbey, taking Ælfflæd and ten nuns with her. The monastery’s later history is unclear, as it disappears from records until the 12th century, by which time it may have been sacked by Danish Vikings or simply abandoned. Today, no trace of the monastery remains, but the monastic cemetery has been discovered near St Hilda’s Church. Excavations in 1833 uncovered multiple female skeletons buried in two rows, aligned north to south, with flat stones as pillows and larger stones inscribed with Anglo-Saxon runes and crosses above. One of the namestones found, belonging to Heresuid and Bregesuid, is displayed in St Hilda’s Church. The site was also featured in a 2000 episode of Time Team, where bones and a book clasp were unearthed, continuing to reveal the abbey’s history.
