Burgstall Holenstein

The Burgstall Holenstein stands on a spur above where the Reutebach meets the Avenbach near Holenstein village in Bühlerzell. It is the remains of a small hilltop fort, now just a low mound and fragments of its defensive ditch. A second, nameless earthwork called the Altes Schloss lies 200 metres south on a similar spur towards the Bühler. The site’s only written trace is a 1389 mention of a man named Kunz Ruhe ‘sitting at Holenstein’, but it is unclear whether he ever lived on the mound. Archaeologists recognise the earthworks as medieval, yet nothing survives above ground to show how long it was occupied or why it was abandoned. Local tradition calls the southern earthwork the Altes Schloss, though it may have seen little or no use. Visitors reach the quiet woodland clearing by following farm tracks from Holenstein. The main mound is small enough to circle in a few minutes, while the Altes Schloss lies further along the spur with views across the valley. The area is peaceful, with only the sound of the streams breaking the silence. The mounds and ditches are modest but give a sense of the site’s original position guarding the stream junction.
