Ryde Theatre and Town Hall

Ryde Town Hall stands in Lind Street on the Isle of Wight. Built in 1831 as a market hall, it was designed by James Sanderson in neoclassical style. The symmetrical front has a tetrastyle portico on the ground floor and another with Ionic columns above. Wings on each side once held market stalls, while the first floor contained a public hall and council rooms. A three-stage clock tower with a cupola and weather vane was added in 1867, its chimes sounded by hemispherical bells. The building became the headquarters of Ryde Borough Council in 1868. An assembly hall seating 750 was added in 1869 and later fitted with an organ for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. A serious fire in 1933 damaged the structure, which was restored soon after. In 1991 the first floor was converted into a theatre with decorative plasterwork and a proscenium arch. The theatre closed in 2005 and later hosted music events, including a concert by The Stranglers in 2009. Today the town hall shows signs of neglect after years of vacancy and vandalism. Ryde Town Council took a three-year lease in 2020 to raise funds for restoration. The grand neoclassical façade and surviving interior features remain recognisable. The clock tower still dominates the skyline above Lind Street. Plans aim to revive the building as a community asset once more.
