Schloss Freizell
Schloss Freizell stands on a low hill above the Danube in the Mühlviertel region of Upper Austria. It overlooks the looping Schlögener Schlinge from its left bank site near the village of Freizell. The small castle is also called Freizeller Schlössel or Zellerschlössl, and it once belonged to the nearby Marsbach estate. First mentioned in 1443, it passed through several noble families over the centuries. By the 19th century the building had fallen into ruin and served only as a hiding place during wartime. The castle’s oldest surviving parts date from the 16th century. A once-continuous hall on the upper floor still shows its cross-shaped interior walls and tall central tower. Seventeenth-century arched doorways frame the outer walls, while later renovations added red-and-white shutters that were later replaced by plain grey frames. After decades of neglect the building was restored in the 1960s and again in 2022. It now belongs to a private owner and is fully inhabited once more. Visitors approach along a quiet lane that climbs to the hilltop site. The cross-shaped ground plan and central tower are clearly visible from outside. Inside, the restored hall and adjoining rooms reveal the castle’s layered history. The Danube valley spreads below, its looping course framed by distant hills. The peaceful setting and careful repairs make Freizell a quiet witness to centuries of change along the river.
