Greno Woods

Greno Woods is an ancient woodland and nature reserve covering 178 hectares just north of Grenoside village, on the northern edge of Sheffield. Once used as a quarry, hunting ground and commercial forest, it now provides open space for walking, jogging and mountain biking. The site sits within a quiet suburban fringe yet retains the feel of wild countryside. Its rolling terrain and varied tree cover create a sense of depth and seclusion. The woods sit on ground that once supplied Grenoside Sandstone for local building. Over the centuries the land has shifted from industry to recreation without losing its natural character. The woodland has existed since at least 1600, with veteran oaks, beeches and sweet chestnuts marking its long history. During the 19th century Scots pine and larch were planted for timber, and in the 1950s non-native conifers were added. Sheffield Wildlife Trust now removes these conifers and replants native broadleaf species. In 2018 twenty-four disease-resistant English elms were introduced to help counter Dutch elm disease. A 2015 RSPB survey recorded wrens, robins, chaffinches, blue tits, great spotted woodpeckers, great tits and spotted flycatchers among others. Mammals include badgers, roe deer, brown hares and common lizards, while spring brings carpets of bluebell, ramsons and greater stitchwort. Today Greno Woods is criss-crossed by footpaths and bridleways that link to the Trans Pennine Trail. A special Enchanted Forest Trail was built in 2018 to let young children explore safely among the trees. Mountain bikers gather for the annual Peaty’s Steel City Downhill event, started by professional rider Steve Peat. The paths wind past old quarry faces softened by moss and ivy, and through stands of beech and oak that frame distant views of Sheffield. On quiet mornings the woods feel remote, yet the city’s edge is never far away.
