Stamford Brook tube station

Stamford Brook is a London Underground station on the eastern edge of Chiswick in west London. It sits on the District line between Turnham Green and Ravenscourt Park stations. The main entrance opens onto Goldhawk Road with a smaller entrance in Prebend Gardens. The station lies in London fare zone two. Stamford Brook takes its name from the small river that once flowed above ground but now runs mostly underground. The line through Stamford Brook opened on New Year’s Day 1869 by the London and South Western Railway. The District Railway began services in 1877 and became the only operator by 1916. In the early 1930s the tracks were rebuilt to allow Piccadilly line trains to pass through. Stamford Brook gained its unusual layout with one island platform and one side platform serving three tracks. Visitors find a quiet station with a single ticket barrier installed in 1964. London Buses route 237 stops directly outside while several other routes pass along nearby Chiswick High Road. The station’s two entrances and simple platforms reflect its role as a local transport link rather than a tourist site.
