Curve

Curve is Leicester’s largest theatre, set in the city centre’s cultural quarter near Rutland Street. Designed by architect Rafael Viñoly with scenographers ducks scéno and Charcoalblue, it opened in 2008 after years of planning and cost increases. The building has two auditoria: a 970-seat Theatre and a 350-seat Studio, which can be combined into one space for 1,300 people. A glass façade reveals the open foyer, café and stage from the street. Two massive steel walls rise to link stage and foyer, making performances visible even before the audience enters. The theatre was created by Leicester City Council, Arts Council England and others, with funding from the National Lottery and the European Union. Its first show, Lift Off, celebrated the opening, followed by Simply Cinderella, which Queen Elizabeth II attended. Productions have featured stars such as Juliette Binoche, Akram Kahn and Pixie Lott. During lockdowns, Curve streamed hit shows like Sunset Boulevard and The Color Purple, earning praise from critics. Touring hits such as Matilda the Musical and War Horse have also played there. Inside, the foyer offers views across the stage, café and bars. The auditoria host musicals, plays and new writing, from Hairspray to The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole. The Leicester Theatre Trust, which runs Curve, also once operated the Haymarket Theatre. The building stands as a modern landmark in Leicester’s arts scene, where visitors can watch a show or simply enjoy the glass-walled public spaces.
