King's Castle

King’s Castle stands on a rise above Ardglass in County Down, Northern Ireland. Built in the 12th century, it grew over the centuries until parts collapsed in 1830. A full restoration returned it to its original form and finished in 1988. Since then it has served as a nursing home. The name comes from its past as a royal fortress. The castle once ranked as the largest of Ardglass’s many castles. In 1833 it was described as large and strong but already falling into decay. Its walls and towers still show the strength of its medieval design. The 19th-century rebuild kept the original layout and character. Today it remains a working building while keeping its historic appearance. Visitors find a sturdy stone castle set on a hillside above the harbour. The restored walls and towers stand clearly against the sky. Inside, the nursing home occupies the main floors, so only the exterior and grounds are open. The view from the hill takes in Ardglass and the Irish Sea beyond. The castle’s quiet presence recalls its long past as a royal stronghold.
