Cruggleton Old Parish Church and Burial Ground

Cruggleton Old Parish Church stands three kilometres south of Garlieston in Dumfries and Galloway, overlooking Wigtown Bay. Built in the second quarter of the 12th century, it was once linked to Whithorn Priory. After long decay, John Crichton-Stuart, the 3rd Marquess of Bute, led its reconstruction in the 1890s. The church sits alone in open ground, its stone walls rising from the original foundations. A long nave leads to a narrower chancel, both covered by a slate roof. The building’s simple plan uses rounded arches for doors and windows. The south door has small shafts framing the entrance. Inside, the wooden roof truss dates from the 1890s restoration. The walls are of rough stone dressed with natural ashlar. Later lancet windows light the gables, replacing older openings. The church is listed at the highest Scottish heritage grade. Beside the church lies the burial ground, dotted with weathered stones. The site offers wide views across the bay and surrounding farmland. Visitors walk past low drystone dykes that mark the boundary. The quiet setting makes it easy to imagine the centuries of worship and remembrance here.
