West Cliff Theatre

The West Cliff Theatre stands on a cliff above the sea in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex. It began in 1894 when Bert Graham started a small concert party on waste ground in Agate Road. By 1899 the group moved to West Cliff Gardens where they performed to local audiences. In 1912 they welcomed Stanley Holloway, later a famous actor and comedian, who stayed for three years. The present building was erected in 1928 by Graham and his partner Will Bentley on the same site. The theatre is worth the journey because it links early seaside entertainment with later film history. In 1934 Will Hammer bought the building and soon founded Hammer Film Productions, famous for horror films. After Hammer’s death in 1957 the council took over, ensuring the shows continued. A group of local enthusiasts took charge in 1985 and turned it into a year-round venue by 1989. Visitors find a modest theatre with a traditional stage and seating arranged in stalls and circle. The West Cliff Trust now books plays, musicals and summer shows, keeping the spirit of seaside variety alive. Outside, the cliff-top gardens overlook the beach and North Sea. Inside, the walls still carry echoes of Holloway’s voice and later stars who trod the boards.
