Wasserschloss Gallspach
Wasserschloss Gallspach stands on the main square of Gallspach, a small market town in Upper Austria’s Grieskirchen district. The building is a four-winged, two-storey structure with a moat and a second pond, reached by a bridge. Its design resembles a large farmstead, with a round tower and arcades on two sides of the inner courtyard. The castle’s history begins in the 12th century, when it was held by the Gallspach family. Over the centuries it passed through many noble hands, including the Walseers, the Geumanns, and the Kueffsteins. In 1912 the Zeileis family took ownership and turned part of it into a medical practice and a radiophysical institute. The institute’s garden contains two bronze statues by Josef Riedl, added in 1975. Today the castle remains in private hands and can only be viewed from outside. The moat and the former brewery courtyard show how the site once functioned. The arcades and the round tower recall its medieval past, while the institute’s garden adds a modern touch. Visitors see a quiet place where history and medicine meet.
