Central Park, Cowdenbeath

Central Park stands in the heart of Cowdenbeath, Fife, as a multi-use stadium for football and stock car racing. It occupies a central site just off the High Street, with the football pitch at its core and a tarmac racetrack running around it. The ground opened in 1917 for Cowdenbeath F.C. and added speedway soon after. Greyhound racing began here in 1928 and ran until 1965. Stock car racing arrived in 1970 and has since hosted world championship events. The stadium carries a long football history. Cowdenbeath F.C. moved from North End Park to Central Park in 1917. A main stand built in 1921 welcomed a record crowd of 25,586 for a Scottish League Cup tie against Rangers in 1949. Floodlights were installed in 1968 for a match against Celtic. A fire in 1992 destroyed half the main stand, leaving the surviving section now called the West Stand. The Alex Menzies Stand opened in 1995, adding seated capacity and new facilities. Visitors find three open terraces around the pitch and two stands on the west side. The West Stand and the Alex Menzies Stand sit side by side, each with floodlight pylons that can block views. The pitch measures 107 by 66 yards and remains the home ground for Cowdenbeath F.C. The racetrack still hosts stock car meetings on tarmac surrounding the football field. A short walk from Cowdenbeath railway station makes the ground easy to reach.
