Burg Medard

Burg Medard stands above the village of Medard in the Kusel district of Rhineland-Palatinate. It was once a hilltop refuge built by the Celts, now known only as earthworks and a surrounding ditch. The site rises about 300 metres above sea level and is sometimes called the Römerwarte. The remains show a circular rampart and a wide ditch that once protected the inner area. Archaeologists believe the Celts used the place as a place of refuge in times of danger. Little else survives of the original structure. Visitors walk along the grassy ramparts and look down into the dry ditch. From the top there are wide views over the surrounding countryside. The site is quiet and uncrowded, reached by a short path from the village.
