Burganlage Volkerode
The small Romanesque hilltop fortress of Volkerode stands on a sandstone crag in the centre of the village in Thüringen’s Eichsfeld district. Its core is a 12th-century keep, later turned into a manor house, surrounded by a curtain wall, a bakehouse and a later manor building. The keep shows layers of Romanesque, late-Gothic and Renaissance styles, its final changes made in the 19th century. The estate belonged to the von Volkerode knights, then to the von Hanstein family under Mainz’s archbishops, and later passed through the von Harstall and von Weihers lines. After 1815 ownership changed often until the village bought it in 2009. A local preservation society now restores the buildings, adding new staircases and a dormer floor to the keep in 2013. Visitors walk past the bakehouse and along the ring wall to the keep, whose new staircase leads up to the dormer chamber. The half-timbered manor house stands beside medieval cellars, while a carved coat of arms on the wall recalls Conrad von Hanstein. The quiet village square frames views of the restored sandstone walls rising above the crag.
