Chamberlain Square

Chamberlain Square lies in the heart of Birmingham, a wide open space surrounded by grand Victorian and modern buildings. The square takes its name from Joseph Chamberlain, the city’s most famous mayor, and the Chamberlain Memorial stands at its centre. A tall fountain rises 20 metres to mark his achievements, designed by John Henry Chamberlain. Nearby, the Birmingham Town Hall and the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery overlook the square. One and Two Chamberlain Square frame the northern side, their glass façades reflecting the changing light. The square has been reshaped several times, most recently in 2021 after five years of closure. The old Central Library and Paradise Forum were removed to make way for new paving, steps and lighting. Two office buildings now provide 350,000 square feet of commercial space around the square. Statues of James Watt, Joseph Priestley and Thomas Attwood add character to the steps and lawns. Each statue tells a story of Birmingham’s scientific and civic past. Visitors find a calm, spacious square with wide paths and modern seating. The Chamberlain Memorial remains the focal point, its water still flowing beneath the bronze figures. The Christmas Craft Fair fills the square every November and December, drawing crowds since 1997.
