Theater Duisburg
The Theater Duisburg stands in the city of Duisburg in the Regierungsbezirk Düsseldorf. It is one of two opera houses used by the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the other being the Opernhaus Düsseldorf. The building was designed by Professor Martin Dulfer and opened in 1912. During the Second World War it suffered damage and was later rebuilt in 1950. The theatre has played a central role in the company’s history since the war. The Deutsche Oper am Rhein resumed performances after the war with Elektra by Richard Strauss. The 50th anniversary of this resumption was marked in 2006 with a performance of the same opera in Duisburg. The company had first presented Elektra in Düsseldorf on 29 September 1956. The theatre’s reconstruction and continued use reflect the resilience of cultural life in the region. Visitors find a theatre that blends classical architecture with modern facilities. The interior hosts opera productions throughout the year. The building itself stands as a reminder of the city’s cultural recovery after wartime destruction.
