Culcreuch Castle

Culcreuch Castle stands on a low hill near the village of Fintry, close to Loch Lomond in central Scotland. Built in 1296 by Maurice Galbraith, it was the stronghold of Clan Galbraith for over three centuries. The castle passed through many hands, from the Napiers to the Menzies family, each leaving their mark on its structure. In the 17th century it briefly housed Oliver Cromwell’s troops during the English Civil War. The Napier family later added north and east extensions in the early 18th century, blending old and new styles. For five generations the Napiers owned the estate before selling it in 1796 to Alexander Spiers, who introduced industry to Fintry. The castle’s history spans more than seven hundred years of continuous habitation, making it one of the longest-inhabited in central Scotland. It became a hotel in 1984 under Arthur Haslam’s ownership, continuing its role as a place of welcome. The Chinese Bird Room, added around 1723, reflects the Scottish Enlightenment’s fascination with East Asian art. Its hand-painted wallpaper shows exotic birds, butterflies and flowers in vivid detail. This rare interior survives as one of Britain’s oldest intact Chinese paper hangings. Visitors find a rectangular tower house with three main floors and an attic under a slate roof. The original medieval core contrasts with later Georgian extensions, creating a layered architectural history. The Chinese Bird Room offers a glimpse of 18th-century chinoiserie craftsmanship preserved in situ. Views stretch across the surrounding countryside towards Loch Lomond. The castle’s setting amid gentle hills and woodland adds to its quiet presence. Though no longer open to the public, its walls still echo centuries of stories.
