Holy Trinity Church, Torbryan

Holy Trinity Church stands in the quiet village of Torbryan, a short distance from Ipplepen in Devon. Built in the 15th century, it is one of the oldest surviving churches in the area. The building is made of local stone and has a tall Perpendicular-style tower with an octagonal stair turret on the south side. A small vestry was added in the 19th century to provide extra space. The church was once a busy place of worship but is now cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. It was given to the Trust in 1987 to ensure its survival. The church is worth visiting for its fine medieval craftsmanship. The rood-screen inside is carved with intricate detail and once held brightly coloured paintings of saints. Stained glass from the same period still fills some of the windows, though it has been repaired over time. In 2013, two panels showing Saint Victor of Marseilles and Saint Margaret of Antioch were stolen from the screen. The thieves damaged a third panel before the Metropolitan Police Art and Antiques Unit recovered them abroad. After careful restoration, the panels were returned to their place. Inside, visitors find a simple but impressive space with high ceilings and stone arches. The rood-screen dominates the view, its carvings and faded paintings drawing the eye. The stained glass casts coloured light across the floor, especially in the morning. The tower offers a view over the surrounding countryside when climbed. Outside, the churchyard is peaceful, with old yew trees and weathered gravestones. The building remains a quiet reminder of Devon’s medieval past.
