St. Mary the Virgin, Great Warley

St Mary the Virgin stands in the quiet village of Great Warley in Essex. It is a Grade I listed parish church built in 1902 and consecrated two years later. The church was designed by Charles Harrison Townsend, an architect known for his Arts and Crafts style. Its most striking feature is the Modern Style interior, created by Sir William Reynolds-Stephens. This British Art Nouveau decoration includes intricate woodwork and stained glass. The Heseltine family donated both money and land for the church’s construction. A single war grave in the churchyard remembers a Royal Army Ordnance Corps officer from the Second World War. The interior is a rare example of early 20th-century Art Nouveau in England. Reynolds-Stephens filled the space with flowing, organic motifs that cover walls, ceilings and fittings. The stained-glass windows show figures in soft, luminous colours against floral backgrounds. The pulpit and reredos are carved with delicate plant forms that rise like vines. Even the pews carry the same curving, natural patterns. The overall effect is one of harmony between art and worship. The building remains almost unchanged since its opening in 1904. Visitors enter through a modest exterior of red brick and stone. Inside, the space feels both intimate and uplifting. Light filters through the coloured glass to cast shifting patterns on the floor. The ceiling vaults rise gently above the congregation. Every surface invites closer inspection of the craftsmanship. The war grave in the churchyard adds a quiet reminder of recent history.
