A18 road

The A18 is a main road in eastern England that runs from Doncaster in South Yorkshire to Ludborough in Lincolnshire. It passes through towns such as Scunthorpe and Brigg, crossing flat fenland and crossing the boundary between Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire. The road was once a busy route but much of it has been replaced by the M180 motorway. The A18 is worth knowing for its engineering history and safety record. Mortal Ash Hill was once a steep 1-in-11 gradient until it was rebuilt as a dual carriageway in 1964. In 2010 the Road Safety Foundation named a section near Grimsby the most dangerous road in the country for car drivers. After a fatal collision in 2015, the government allocated £175 million for safety improvements on the A18. A drive along the A18 shows changing landscapes. West of Brigg the road runs beside the North Engine Drain next to the M180. Near Crowle it crosses Pilfrey Bridge over the Three Rivers. Between Laceby and Ludborough the road follows the line of a former Roman road before reaching its eastern end close to Humberside Airport.
