Lost John's Cave

Lost John’s Cave is a sprawling cave system on Leck Fell in Lancashire, northern England. It sits within the Three Counties System and is known for its three vertical routes used for single-rope technique training. The cave offers practical advantages for cavers, as many pitches can be rigged away from water, making it usable even in wet conditions. Routes like the Dome Route, Centipede Route and Monastery Route all meet at Battleaxe Streamway. From there, cavers follow Battleaxe Traverse, a high-level passage protected by rope, before descending near the water. The cave is valued for its exchange trips, where cavers can switch between different routes. Upstream leads to high-level passages such as Lyle Cavern, which connects to the Notts Pot system. The main streamway continues to points like NPC Avens, where side passages like Boxhead Pot and It’s a Cracker join the network. Downstream, cavers navigate neck-deep pools past inlets that link to other caves like Rumbling Hole and Death’s Head Hole. After 800 metres, the passage ends at a sump that connects with Pippikin Pot. Visitors to Lost John’s Cave find a challenging but rewarding underground environment. The vertical routes provide opportunities for technical caving, while the Battleaxe Traverse offers a safer high-level passage. The cave’s passages vary from tight squeezes to wide chambers, with streams and pools adding to the adventure.
