Trinity Bridge

Trinity Bridge is a three-way footbridge crossing the River Irwell between Manchester and Salford. Designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, it was completed in 1995 as one of his earliest bridge works. The structure features straight white lines and a tall rotund pylon rising to 41 metres. It remains the only project Calatrava has finished in the United Kingdom. The bridge marks the boundary between the two cities and connects their riverside paths. The bridge’s design reflects Calatrava’s signature style, using clean geometric forms and white surfaces. It was repainted and inspected in 2010 as part of a 15-year maintenance plan. Construction was carried out by Dew Group Limited, based in Oldham, Lancashire. Trinity Bridge stands as a simple yet striking example of modern engineering in an urban setting. Visitors find a broad walkway with wide, unobstructed views of the river and both city skylines. The pylon’s height gives a sense of openness above the water. The bridge’s three-way design allows smooth movement between different directions without crossing paths. Nearby, the riverside paths offer space for walking or cycling along the water. The white surfaces reflect sunlight, making the bridge stand out against the surroundings.
