St Mary's Church, Welshpool

St Mary’s Church stands in the centre of Welshpool, Powys, as the Anglican parish church. It is a Grade I listed building, recognised for its historical importance. The church traces its origins to the 5th or 6th century when St Cynfelin, also known as St Matu, founded it during the Age of the Saints. The oldest surviving part is the lower courses of the tower, built around 1250. Most of the present structure was rebuilt or restored in 1871 by George Edmund Street. The nave was rebuilt in the 16th century, and further substantial restoration took place in the same year. The church is worth visiting for its connections to notable figures and events. The 15th-century chancel ceiling may have come from Strata Marcella Abbey, five miles away. A stone in the churchyard is said to have been part of the abbot’s throne. A memorial inside honours Bishop William Morgan, who translated the Bible into Welsh and served as vicar from 1575 to 1579. Adam of Usk worked as a priest here in 1411. The churchyard also contains seven Commonwealth war graves, including soldiers and an airman from the two world wars. Inside, visitors find a spacious nave rebuilt in the 16th century. The 15th-century chancel ceiling adds a historic touch to the interior. The churchyard surrounds the building and holds several war graves marked with simple headstones. The lower courses of the tower, dating from the 13th century, remain as the oldest visible part of the structure. The interior reflects the 19th-century restoration by George Edmund Street, blending earlier elements with Victorian craftsmanship. The memorial to Bishop William Morgan stands near the chancel, a reminder of his important work. The churchyard’s war graves offer a quiet space for reflection on the past.
