Idle Valley Nature Reserve

Idle Valley Nature Reserve lies in north Nottinghamshire, along the western bank of the River Idle. It stretches over 4.8 kilometres from north to south and covers more than 450 hectares, making it the largest wetland in the county. The reserve occupies land once quarried for sand and gravel, with extraction ending in 2011 after decades of operation. After quarrying stopped, flooded pits regenerated naturally, creating habitats for birds and wildlife. In 2002, Natural England designated the site as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust now manages the reserve, supported by a £1 million Lottery grant and a new boardwalk built in 2017. The reserve supports one of the country’s most important wintering populations of gadwall, along with breeding species such as shoveler, great crested grebe and tufted duck. Over 250 bird species have been recorded here, including rare visitors like gull-billed tern and blue-winged teal. Plans to reintroduce beavers, absent from Nottinghamshire for over 400 years, were approved in 2021. The reserve also hosts 17 regular wildfowl species and breeding waders such as lapwing and redshank. Its flooded gravel pits provide ideal conditions for coot and other waterbirds throughout the year. Visitors enter through the main visitor centre, where paths lead to Bellmoor Lake and beyond. A circular route around the lake offers views of breeding and wintering birds. The reserve’s boardwalk improves access near the visitor centre, linking to public rights-of-way across the site. The northern end can be reached on foot from the centre or via Lound village. Most areas are wheelchair accessible, though some paths become muddy after rain. The reserve remains open all year, providing a quiet place to watch wildlife in a landscape shaped by past industry.
