Langenberg

The Langenberg is an elongated chalk hill north of Göttingerode and south of Harlingerode in Bad Harzburg, Lower Saxony. It sits within the Landkreis Goslar and forms part of the Northern Harz Boundary Fault. The hill exposes a 203-metre-thick sequence of carbonate rocks from the Süntel Formation, deposited in a shallow sea during the late Jurassic period. These layers now stand nearly vertical, tilted by the rise of the Harz mountains in the Lower Cretaceous. Geologists have long studied this classical exposure, and students visit regularly. The quarry also produced the first sauropod dinosaur fossil from northern Germany’s Jurassic rocks. The site gained national geological importance after the discovery of Europasaurus remains in 1998. The quarry’s vertical rock walls reveal clear evidence of the Harz boundary fault, making it a key reference for regional geology. Between the mid-18th and mid-20th centuries, the hill hosted iron and chalk mining, including the Hansa Pit opened in 1861. Industrial chalk extraction began in 1871 and expanded greatly after the Second World War. Plans to extend the quarry were halted in 1985 after legal challenges and the designation of part of the hill as a protected area in 1984. Today the Langenberg serves as a recreation area with narrow hiking trails and wide views over Harlingerode and the northern plains. To the south, the Harz mountains and the Brocken are visible. The abandoned quarry remains off-limits due to dangerous vertical rims, yet illegal motocross use continues. The hill’s name, first recorded in the late 13th century, simply means ‘long mountain’. Its geological layers and mining history make it a distinctive landscape in the region.
