Loups of Barnshangan

The Loups of Barnshangan are a series of waterfalls in Dumfries and Galloway, southern Scotland. They lie where the River Cairn drops sharply over hard rock ledges into deep pools below. The falls form where the river’s flow is concentrated into narrow channels, creating white water and spray. Their name comes from the Scots word ‘loup’, meaning a leap or jump, describing the water’s sudden plunge. The site sits in a quiet glen surrounded by heather moorland and conifer plantations. Visitors reach the falls by a rough path that follows the river upstream from the small road near Barnshangan farm. The falls are recognised among Scotland’s highest single-drop waterfalls, though their exact height is debated. Their dramatic drop makes them a notable feature in a region better known for rolling hills than steep cascades. The site illustrates how rivers carve through varied landscapes, from gentle flows to sudden vertical drops. Unlike the wet west coast Highlands, Dumfries and Galloway has a drier climate, yet the Loups still form impressive falls. Their Gaelic name ‘Eas’ would not apply here, as the region’s place names are mostly of Brythonic or Scots origin. At the falls, visitors find a series of rocky steps where water leaps and foams. The main drop is followed by smaller cascades that feed into deep, dark pools. The noise of rushing water fills the glen, especially after rain when the flow increases. The surrounding woodland provides shade and shelter, with views of the falls framed by birch and pine. The path ends near the base of the falls, where the river widens and slows before continuing downstream. The site offers a quiet spot to watch the water’s power and the way it shapes the land.
